UTRGV Brownsville MUSI 1167.02 Woodwind Methods II (Double Reeds portion, Aug. 28-Oct. 30) Fall 2018 Dr. Carol McNabb Goodwin Office: BMSLC 2.212 Office hours: TBA Email: [email protected] Office phone: (956) 882-7528. Recommended Text : Guide to Teaching Woodwinds , 5th ed., Westphal. Pub. Wm. C. Brown ISBN 0-697-04392-4, on line from $64.35. Materials for playing will be provided. Required Materials : oboe reed (medium hard, required Aug. 28, bassoon reed (medium hard, required Sept. 25), transparent plastic film can or prescription bottle to soak reeds in, small mirror, and a notebook for handouts. Softer reed strengths are not acceptable. For each day that you come to class starting Tues. Aug. 28, without all required materials, one point will be subtracted from your final course grade for double reeds. Reeds are fragile and easily broken. If you break your reed, you will be expected to have a new one the next class day. For this reason, it may be a good idea to buy two. Reeds may or may not be available at area music stores. Melhart Music in McAllen generally keeps a good supply. Oboe and bassoon reeds may be available from UTRGV oboe and bassoon majors. Expect to pay about $15-$20 per reed. Important Note: Let us all stay healthy by observing the following: DO NOT SHARE REEDS OR REED SOAKING WATER. WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE CLASS so that the instruments are kept clean. BE SURE TO WIPE OFF THE KEYS AND SWAB THE INSTRUMENT EVERY TIME YOU PUT IT AWAY. You will be financially responsible for damage or loss of instruments (including accessories) that you use. NEVER LEAVE AN INSTRUMENT UNATTENDED OR IN A CAR! Because we have only 8 or 9 days on each instrument, the course will move quickly. Playing double reeds requires embouchure endurance, which is built and maintained by playing regularly. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you practice Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for approximately half an hour, as well as at least once during the weekend, if possible.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
