Disease Informational Table Module Name Date 3 2 November 2019 Diseas e Name Disease Description Sympto ms Treatments Social Impact Type I Diabet es Type I diabetes also known as insulin- dependent or juvenile diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin or produces very little. Insulin is a necessary hormone in allowing glucose to enter cells and produce energy. Type I diabetes is influenced by genetics and some viruses and generally appears during childhood or adolescence but can affect adults. The cause is unknown and generally the body’s immune system accidentally destroys insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Weakne ss and fatigue, excess and extreme hunger, mood changes and irritabilit y, constan t and frequen t urinatio n, and unusual bed- wetting. Type I diabetes has no cure and treatment options are centered around blood sugar level management by insulin through injection.
