Compare and contrast the structure and function of the nervous and endocrine system. The nervous system is a complex network of nerves that are responsible for transporting signals and messages from the spinal cord to the body and brain while the endocrine system is a group of glands responsible for hormone production, regulation in growth and development of the body, metabolic tissue function, emotions, sleep, and other internal functions. Both the nervous and endocrine systems are regulatory systems allowing the communication between cells, tissues, and organs. The main responsibility of these systems is to coordinate and control signals provided to the body through internal and external means. The regulation from the nervous and endocrine systems helps to maintain homeostasis. While these two systems have similarities, there are clear differences in the rate, type, and duration of response as well as the mode of signal transmission, and the way signals are transmitted. The rate of response differs from these two systems as the nervous system responds rapidly to the stimuli through action potential and neurotransmitters while the endocrine system produces a slower response through hormone secretion which travels through the circulatory system in response to the issue. Additionally, the nervous system response is generally localized and temporary while the endocrine system response is widely spread and lasts permanently. Lastly, the mode of signal transmission in the nervous system is through neurotransmitters submitted by neurons to transmit electromechanical signals while in the endocrine system hormones are the chemical signals utilized in transmitting signals through the blood stream to target the tissue.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
