Short vs. Long Distance Cell Signaling In Long Distance cell signaling hormones/Pheromones are released in one part of the body to travel to another part of the body. Pheromones release into the environment. Endocrine signaling is a type of long distance signaling. It deals with cell growth. The signal is released into the bloodstream and get to the target cell that way. In Short Distance cell signaling is when a signal is released in a localized area. An example would be Paracrine signaling that targets a cell nearby. Like the relationship with a neurotransmitter and synapses of a nerve cell. Stages of Signal Transduction Pathway There are 3 parts to a transduction pathway: reception, transduction, and response. 1. Reception - Is like when a phone is ringing. Its is when a molecule binds to the membrane receptor protein. This molecule is called the ligand. A ligand refers to the actual signal molecule that binds to the receptor protein on the cell membrane or inside the cell.
