Answer the following questions by using thorough, complete sentences. Make sure that any references to the text are cited in MLA format. 1. What does the threshold represent in this short story? (2) First crossing of the threshold he went out of the house through a door. The door is his thersold. He, literally, separated himself from Faith leaving her behind; his wife. But on a spiritual level, he left his inner faith behind. That is never a good thing in Hawthorne's stories. (Para.6). In the second crossing of another threshold he crossed over from his front lawn and into the woods. The road from separating the lawn and the forest is the threshold. He, literally, left his house and his comfort zone and is now in the woods, the new world, that he is uncomfortable in. He, spiritually, separated the good and evil from his life and entering into evil leaving the ‘good’ behind as well. (Para.7-8) 2. Colors are important in this short story. a. What do Faith’s pink ribbons say about her? (2) Faith is the perfect balance between sin and purity. (Para. 1 and 4) b. What does Young Goodman Brown’s name say about him? (Focus on the color in this question, not on “Goodman”.) (2) Goodman Brown is a mixed up mess of all colors, and uncleanliness.
