H 1 = 10 ft, H 2 = 15 ft, H 3 = 9 ft, γ 1 = 108 pcf , ϕ 1 = 35° , c 1 ’ = 0 , γ 2 = 138 pcf (saturated unit weight, ϕ 2 = 28° , c 2 ’ = 215 psf. In addition, three surcharges of equal magnitude are applied: q = 1200 psf, a’ = 12 ft, and b’ = 10 ft. (A) Plot the resulting lateral pressure distribution diagram , to exact scale, for the Rankine’s active condition by combining the individual pressure diagrams induced by the back soil and three surcharges. (B) Determine the net Rankine active fore per unit length of the wall based on the resulting (combined) lateral pressure distribution diagram from Part A. Note 1: Water pressure acting on both the inside and the outside faces of the wall must be taken into account Note 2: Use 5 equally spaced “depth intervals” for assessing the lateral pressure diagram from an individual surcharge Note 3: Document your answers by following the same step-by-step solution protocol, including tables, for solving the examples included in your class notes.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
