Song: Some Nights by Fun. Socratic Method/Philosophical Question: “What do we stand for?” The song “Some Nights” by Fun. Is about war, the song is in the perspective of the soldiers who are fighting in the battlefield thinking about their experiences and contemplating on the life that they had before the war. Although they’re in a war the song does not specify why they’re having a war, but the clearer theme seems to be “what are they fighting for?” The question that always constantly pops up and it can be heard in the lyrics “What do I stand for?” and it follows up with “most night I don’t know anymore” because the soldiers realize that they’ve been in war yet they forget what are they are fighting for. One soldier thought about a girl she had been with the previous night “I found a martyr in my bed tonight, she stops my bones from wondering just who am I” Another thought about his/her mom about how they left her “Sorry to leave, Mom, I had to go” and another one thinking about his sister “My heart is breaking for my sister” Each of these moments seem to give the soldiers their fighting spirit back and keeps them going. Though there is no clear answer to what they stand for, from what the soldiers have reflected upon it seems that the general answer might be to protect their loved ones and their families, the soldiers achieved this answer through secondary reflection and contemplation about their experiences with loved ones and the memories they had leading them to keep going and this can be seen as their answer, to what they’re fighting for “Family, friends, and loved ones”...
