A REVIEW OF THE NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION LITERATURE 2 platform for understanding the unspoken and underlying factors that study subjects encounter in their work place and social environments which are challenging their ability to create a better situation for themselves. This paper covers a portion of research in the areas of non-verbal communication, communication skills and the application of this concept in various areas of human endeavor. This literature review is for research into understanding the different communication avenues and how they are utilized within organizations and in other life endeavors. The review will focus on shedding light on the need for non-verbal communication within organizations, its impacts, applications and nature of the various types of non-verbal communication in organizations.

A REVIEW OF THE NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION LITERATURE 3 Proposal Nonverbal communication is defined as: “communication that is comprised of different ways of conveying information through the use of one’s body, one’s environment, and physical adornment of a body (Sadri & Flammia, 2011 p.161). The decision to discuss the subject of non- verbal communication is predicated upon my interest in exploring the impact and interaction of non-verbal communication on organizations. The challenges involved in interpreting non-verbal communications calls for further studies. Fielding (2006) identified several challenges with judgments arising from interpretation of non-verbal cues. They include: wrong first impression assessment of strangers based on superficial cues, wrong judgments based on belief about appearances and non-verbal behaviors, difficulties involved in changing first impressions based on evaluation of non-verbal cues, wrong impression of facial expressions, eye contact etc., and stereotyping. I found that the challenges associated with interpretation of non-verbal cues have negatively impacted peer interactions in several organizations where I have worked. This study would assist me in identifying the ways of dealing with these challenges in the future. Professional Significance of this study This study seeks to explore in detail, the impact of body language (as part of non-verbal communication) on organizational communication effectiveness.
