Learning Objectives for Digestion and Absorption 1. Define the terms digestions and absorption Digestion - The chemical breakup of complex macromolecules into smaller molecules that can be absorbed. Absorption -the process of bringing those smaller molecules INSIDE the body 2. Identify which organs are part of the GI tract itself and which are related to its fxn. Esophagus------stomach------small intestines------large intestines 3. Describe the roles that longitudinal, circular, and sphincter muscles play in digestion, absorption and excretion 4. Longitudinal -muscles that move in wave like motions and helps food move through the digestive tract Circular/sphincter -regulated food/material passing through and prevents food/material from coming back up 5. Define peristalsis - Wave like motions that help the bolus travel down and throught the digestive tract. 6. List the 6 chemicals or types of chemicals involved in digestion and their sites of synthesis and where they fxn Chemicals Protease amylases
