Martha Wright Final diagnosis - Prolactinoma, which is a benign pituitary tumor that produces a hormone known as prolactin. Treatment -Cabergoline and bromocriptine are dopamine agonists can help shrink the tumor. If medication doesn’t help radiation therapy and surgery may be needed. Prognosis - Is promising, if a patient responds well to treatment. It is important to check back with the physician to see if the tumor has returned. Prevention - the underlining cause of these tumors are still not clear; however, genetics may play role. Prolactin level rise due a multitude of factors such as a pregnancy, eating, sexual intercourse, physical stress, injury to the chest, and epileptic seizures. Certain medications can affect the dopamine and increase prolactin levels, a person may want to avoid taking antipsychotics, high blood pressure, medication used to treat nausea and vomiting and pain relivers.
