Bio 171 Lecture Notes – 1/4/2008 Biology : Life Science o Life can be studied at several  hierarchical levels Multi-celled organism Population Community Ecosystem The biosphere o Life is exceedingly diverse Millions of species 3 major groupings called "domains" Bacteria Archaea Eukarya - humans Biologist's views have changed over time 2 kingdoms => 3 kingdoms => 5 kingdoms => 3 domains Science is self-correcting Over time our understanding improves o Species have unique traits (characteristics) Example : male pipefish give birth, etc. Adaptations : unique traits that increase a species' ability to survive or  reproduce Even the  sexes within a species  may differ in morphology, behavior, and  physiology o Life also has underlying unity Science is a particular way of understanding the natural world o ALL      scientists, even in biology… Ask questions      about the natural world Propose explanations
