Chapter 3 Outline – General Chemistry 8 th  Edition Mass and Moles of Substance o Molecular Weight and Formula Weight Molecular weight : the sum of the atomic weights of all the atoms  in a molecule of  the substance Formula weight : the sum of the atomic weights of all atoms in a formula unit  of  the compound o The Mole Concept Definition of Mole and Molar Mass Mole  (mol): quantity of a given substance that contains as many  molecules as the # of atoms in 12 g of carbon-12 o Avogadro's number  (NA): the number of atoms in a 12-g sample  of carbon-12 o NA = 6.0221367 x 10²³ In ionic substances, a mole refers to the number of formula units of the  substance Molar mass : the mass of one mole  of the substance Mole Calculations: determined using dimensional analysis Determining Chemical Formulas o Mass Percentages from the Formula
