During the war, Golding witnessed horrific scenes of death and destruction-- someof which he helped cause. As a result of his experiences, he began to ask some serious questionsabout the nature of mankind. To explore these questions, Golding wroteLord of the Flies,a storyabout young boys who are deserted on an island. Throughout the novel, the boys begin to revertto savagery and acts of overbearing evil that reflect humanity in its authentic form. In this novel,Golding claims that all mankind is inherently evil and savage. While Golding may have goodreason to believe such a cynical notion, evidence suggests that mankind is neither wholly goodnor wholly evil; rather man is a product of one’s environment. The environment’s effect onindividuals is shown through the commonly accepted nature of highschool girls, the StanfordPrison Experiment, and the Brutality of a Nation Raised from Hatred.First of all, the surrounding environment’s effect on one’s psyche can be shown throughthe commonly accepted behavior of highschool girls. In the article, “Girls Just Want to beMean”, Margaret Talbot does a deep dive research project about the natural behavior ofhighschool girls. Talbot reveals the truth of the bystander girl in the midst of popular girls bystating, ““If she doesn’t do what they want her to do, the popular girls are gonna chuck her out”.In this article it shows the truth of where highschool girls lie in their normal everyday life.
