There are different mechanisms of evolution which allow the process to take place. Mutations are one way evolution may occur. Mutations are the only way to produce new variation and they may or may not be heritable. Mutations increase genetic diversity within a population. These can be advantageous or harmful. On the contrary, genetic drift decreases allele variety. Genetic drift is a result of changes in allele frequencies due to random factors. Evolution happens through natural selection. Natural selection is changes in allele frequencies due to differential reproductive success. In lab 2, we focused on genetic drift. We investigated the impact of genetic drift in populations and studied alleles that were lost. Genetic drift is a form of evolution that occurs in various ways.
