FORMULATE AND SUBMIT PROJECT OUTLINE 2 Abstract The present paper would focus on the real problem of the degraded visual environments experienced by aircrews and evaluate the advanced avionics technology. Several deadly accidents have occurred due to DVE due to loss of visual cues and direction, which results in significant human and financial losses. Therefore, the issues caused by the degraded visual environment would be considered, and the remedial ways would be discussed that could help in reducing the issue. Moreover, the need for the advancement in aviation technology would also be considered, which would significantly help in recusing DVE. The examples of accidents and the unfortunate situations would be discussed in the paper to understand the intensity of the problem. Moreover, the possible solutions would be devised, and the need for initiation and implementation of the effective programs in aircraft avionics would be discussed to deal with DVE. Different databases like the National Transportation Safety Board, Flight Safety Foundation, FAA, Aerospace, Honeywell, IATA, US Army Safety Center, and Collins Aerospace would be utilized for accomplishing the project. The paper would conclude best possible ways which can assist pilots in managing with the degraded visual environment as well as have safe flights that would reduce the risks to human life and financial systems. Keywords Degraded visual environments, avionics system, problems, and solutions.
FORMULATE AND SUBMIT PROJECT OUTLINE 3 Project Outline i. Introduction According to the previous record, several aircraft accidents had happened between 2003 and 2007 (Weather-Related, 2010). Majority of the accidents happened due to weather conditions in which most prominent are considered to be the degraded visual environment. The factors that contribute to DVE are the smoke, fog, dust storm, rain, or snow. Whenever these conditions occur during the flight, they affect the performance of the systems of the craft or disturbs the functioning of the pilot, and he became spatially disoriented which ultimately results in unfortunate landings or crashes. It results in heavy human and financial loss. ii. Degraded Visual Environment (DVE) Several accidents are resulting due to DVE which can either take place due to pilot’s inefficiency or the extreme weather conditions like darkness, rain, storm, snow, fog, etc. (Donovan, n.d). It might also take place due to the disturbance on the systems of the aircraft that cause hurdle in takeoff or landing, which results in mishaps. The military has the major shortcoming to deal with these issues, especially with the problems, occurred due to natural environmental conditions as they have to fight in the battlefield or to carry out operations in the deserts or cold, snowy places. These conditions cause hurdle to the pilots in handling the aircraft.
