Virtual Lab 3 (CIVL2611 Fluid Mechanics 2019) Virtual Lab 3 Report 1 INTRODUCTION Ҕ The aim of the report is to determine the ball suspension height’s (h) dependancy on other six parameters that included in the experiment, which are obtained as the diameter of the ball (D), the weight of the ball (W), the jet diameter (d), the jet flow rate (Q), the viscosity of the fluid ( μ ) and the density of the fluid ( ρ ). A virtual environment is introduced to simulates the scenario of the ball which is being suspended by an upward jet of fluid. A empirical equation which contains all the parameters could be determined by changing the value of a selected variable while other values stay constant. The equation plays an important role on determining the suspension height (h) and is also useful in testing prototypes that behave similarly. 2 METHODOLOGY 2.1 DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS In order to determine the dependence of the ball height (h) on other relevant parameters listed below: h : the suspension height of the ball (m); W : the weight of the ball (N); D : the diameter of the ball (m); d : the diameter of the jet (m); Q : the jet flow rate (m ³ /s); ρ : the density of the fluid (kg/m ³ ); μ : the viscosity of the fluid (Ns/m2). A dimensional analysis is carried out to obtain 4 dimensionless groups (see appendix for detailed calculation): .
