Genres of Literature Literature- It is considered a record of significant human experiences rendered in an artistic way using words, images, narratives, and figures of speech. Types of Literature Prose- It uses ordinary and everyday speech and it is often narrative in from though it can expound on topics and provide different perspectives on different topics using well placed figures of speech in an otherwise expository form. It can either be fictional or nonfictional in form. Poetry- It uses carefully chosen and arranged words as well as sound devices, and typically has rhyming in the end. It also uses various figures of speech and comes three forms: narrative, lyrical, and dramatic. Kinds of Prose Fiction-It represents a branch of prose that is imaginative or based on fantasy and parallel but not exactly real life events. Nonfiction- Details stories based on actual and historical individuals and events and writes about them in an artistic manner. Kinds of Fiction Legend- It is a genre of literature that deals with the origin of things, places, events, and phenomena. Short Story-This type of prose is best known for its complete plot cycle and it can be read in one sitting. Novel- A popular type of fiction, it depicts multiple plotlines, several characters, and various perspectives. It is more complex than a short story but it shares with it the complete elements of a narrative. Novella- A story of not more than 40,000 words, it is longer than a short story and shorter than a novel. It shares the same characteristics as both genres of fiction Mythology- Like the legend, it deals with the origin of things and phenomena, yet on an earlier and more ancient scale such as the first man and woman, the formation of nations, and of the world itself, often with narratives that include the gods and goddesses Folktale- These are stories that detail popular beliefs in a particular town, village, region, or province, and originally passed down through the generations by word of mouth Fairy Tale- It is similar to the folktale since it is passed down through generations but it usually involves some supernatural creatures and it has the plot characteristics of a short story. It usually features dwarves, elves, fairies, dragons, knights, and damsels in distress. Kinds of Nonfiction Autobiography-It details real life events that happened in an individual’s life in which the writer recounts the events himself or herself. Biography- Like the autobiography, It details real life events that happened in an individual’s life, but it is written in the third person perspective with the author having access to the person of interest and the author usually looks at that person’s life from various perspectives. Anecdote- It is a short and revealing account of a real person or a real incident, often times including some form of humor.
