Tina Colon Period:2 A.P. European History Dr. Martin Luther Concerning Penitence and Indulgences ( 95 theses) Historical event (Place & Time) - Martin Luther wrote his Ninety-five Theses in 1517 during the sixteenth century. This was the end of the Renaissance period. Luther wrote his theses on the church’s corruption but specifically the selling of indulgences. Luther also believed in the justification by faith which contradicted the church's doctrine. He was able to write this during the sixteenth century rather than any other time because of the church's corruption and greed. Perhaps he could have written this in the fourteenth century because of the church’s corruption during that time period as well. In addition to that, the new technology of the printing press made it easier to spread his ideas much faster. The power of the emperor in the Holy Roman Empire was weak. This is because of the variety of beliefs in that region and diversity among the people. Since the emperor did not have complete power and authority over his region it allowed a greater percentage of freedom. Therefore, allowing Lutherism to spread much easier in the Holy Roman Empire.
