History 1320 Exam 1 Notes 8/30/2018 Westward Expansion Civil war being fought in the east, there was a lot of conflict in the west with Native Americans United states army was divided into 7 departments o 6 of them were stationed in the West (fighting Native Americans) Robert E Lee was a part of the confederacy Many northerners were anti-slavery but everyone was NOT an abolitionist o Not actively involved in ending slavery, just didn’t want it to spread Many of the officers in charge of the Indian reservations were often corrupt o Bc of this the native Americans weren’t supplied and would leave the reservation to go hunt for their people Many native Americans took sides in the Civil War, to advance their own interests o Many signed contracts with the confederacy because they thought if they won maybe the government would have as much as control, also a lot of native Americans had slaves o Cherokee sided with the confederacy For the non-land owning, poor Native Americans, they chose to fight with the United States o Mostly for economic issues o Many Native Americans who chose to fight with the Confederacy actually switched sides and ended up fighting with the United States Mid 1862 the Sioux were in the middle of starvation o Dakota War of 1862 Attacked white reservations After the attack, Minnesota set a reward of $200 for every red skin dead
December 26, 1862 – 38 Sioux tribe members were hung (biggest mass execution to this day) Sand Creek Massacre o United States gave a tribe the right to leave the reservation to hunt, the United States formed a militia to get them back onto the reservation, even though the Native Americans were told they could leave and they didn’t want any conflict. they ended up killing many native Americans, including women and children. Mahpiua Luta (Red Cloud) o Leader of the Sioux to fight the United States. o The treaty of ____ gave the Sioux the right to occupy the Black Hills, as long as the grass still grows. Gave peace between U.S. and Sioux Not shortly after, Gold was discovered in the Black Hills. George Armstrong Custer went and scoped it out, many people found out and attacked the Black Hills, in violation of the treaty. Native Americans killed Custer and 270 of his men July 4 th , 1876 o Soldiers were massacred by Native Americans Battle at bull horn????? o Used to eliminate Native Americans o Sioux were defeated 1889 Ghost Stance Movement o dreamed of day when whites would disappear, buffalo would reappear, and Native Americans could practice their religious practices o US government didn’t believe them, they believed they were planning an uprising. they attacked the religious ceremony and killed many Native Americans, including women and children. Known as the Battle of Wounded Knee 400 years of conflicted between Native Americans and United States ended.
