There is a lot of love, sickness and death presented in the book. However, the majority of the novel rests on Florentino Ariza’s decades of waiting for the first girl who he has loved. Florentino is at the center of this story. He has waited for almost fifty-one years for his first love who is Fermina Daza, who has also fallen in love with Florentino. Unfortunately, Florentino has also loved other women and has had sexual relation ships with other women but his love for Fermina has been some what special at the same time. Fermina and Florentino have started a relationship at a very young age. Fermina is just 15-year old school girl who is immature to be in relationship, where she accepts Florentino’s marriage proposal “Very well, I will only marry you If you promise not to make me eat eggplant”(page 71). Their relationship has been showed to be fun and silent for two years without Fermina’s father knowing. Fermina’s father finds out about the relationship, where Fermina is caught in school writing back a love letter. Both Florentino and Fermina have no fear to love even after Fermina’s dad learns about the relationship and does not seem to be happy and he sends Fermina away to her cousin’s place, so she can forget Florentino. Fermina does not have tobe forgotten Florentino, instead they still have been writing letters to each other.
