Read the following resources provided for Discussion Topic 4 and complete the following questions as a response to this topic. 1) Briefly summarize the main points made in the resource list for this discussion. 2) Integrating what you have read, how has technology changed the nature of social relationships in people of all ages. How has it changed the manner in which “relationship work” is conducted? Are relationships and our sense of self weakened or strengthened by technology? How do you feel about these changes? (Be sure to cite the authors you reference in your response.) The first article gave personal insight on teenager’s point of view on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. A group study that was conducted by Berkman Center for Internet & Society and the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project review many feedbacks on how social media sites impact these teenager’s life on a daily base; which they all had different reasons for the use of these sites. Whether it’s for entertainment, staying connected with family and friends or simply to gain information about their community. Love and sex in the age of social media and mobile communication (C. J. Pascoe, August 5, 2013), shows us how technology has reshaped love, relationships, and sex. As technology advances, we have lost our personal interaction with meeting a partner in common areas such as church, school, a bar or social gathering. The Internet is a social network where many couples get to know each other without meeting face to face and this is where technology can interfere with relationships. Social media profile is your first judgment of a person, meaning some information may or may not be true but another person may be gullible to this information. I do agree, technology is great when it comes to long-distance relationships and simply keeping in touch with your partner throughout the day. Yet, technology takes away the pleasure of what dating really is; in person and quality time with your partner. The study of intimacy and the connectedness base on technology or face to face is an important interpersonal relationship that all human strive to maintain. According to Kiecolt-Glaser, being deprived of an unstable social connection can have a negative effect on human well-being.
