Abstract Cyclohexanol was oxidized to Cyclohexanone using Sodium hypochlorite or household bleach. The experimental procedure was properly carried out except for the distillation of the product, cyclohexanone. An alternative method was done that may have caused some amounts of cyclohexanol to appear in the IR characterization. Introduction In an oxidation reaction, one of the following occurs; loss of electrons or hydrogen, gain of oxygen or an increase in the oxidation state of the compound. In order for the reaction to occur, a separate reduction reaction must occur at the same time. There are many ways to oxidize Cyclohexanol to Cyclohexanone. Some use Dichromate and Chromic Oxide to do so. However, Chromium is said to be a carcinogen. The more common and safer way to oxidize Cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone is by using Sodium Hypochlorite or household bleach (NaOCl). Methodology and Results 5.2 mL of Cyclohexanol, 12 mL of Glacial Acetic Acid and a magnetic stirring bar were placed in a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask. 80 mL of Sodium Hypochlorite
