L&S 30 Lecture 4 1970 Controlled Substances In our society many substances controlled, negative energy around drugs and drug abuse Huge amount of marketing Penalties for some substances, but others that are equally dangerous are heavily marketed Polypharmacy heavy use of many medicines, especially in elderly Not all drugs are illegal: caffeine, antidepressants, stimulants Some with heavy affects Drug abuse #1 drug in treatment for is alcohol Reader p21 Tolerance Need for increasing amount of the substance to achieve desired effect Diminished effect with continued use of the same amount Has metabolic and neurochemical components Body recognizes as not useful, try to excrete them (metabolism) The more use, metabolism speeds up because the body recognizes it More efficient at eliminating it Neurological based on nervous system Less sensitive Less receptors that drugs interact with Periods of non-use changes tolerance
