Running for her life Her calves cramp up as the pounding heel-soles of her shoes struggle to scale towards the hill. She can feel the rubbery, black tar underneath her every stride which shortens as the trail steepens. As the droplets of thin, wavering sweat bounce over her body, the perspiration from the ground instantly vaporizes and she moves forward. It is a fairly basic concept, running; you put on a pair of old Nike running shoes, tie the laces in a bow, or a double knot…or whatever, and you move your legs as fast as you can. However, when she reaches the top of that pebbling, erratic mountain, so many more details seem to come into focus: the clock of 18 minutes and 17 seconds on a 9-lap memory; the 2.5 miles of trail left; the 2.8 foot strides; her 120 pounds of body weight striking the earth in five-month-old and 900 miles of summer training pair of pink Nike Shox 2:40 iD running shoes, the 510-calorie breakfast consisting of a bowl of cereal, half
