What does it mean to be a man?What is the difference between being a man and being a boy? Masculinity plays a huge part in today’s society, whether you’re a teen maturing into a man or have reached the age of an adult, being a man is a very important part of every male’s life. Being a man used to mean being able to provide for a family, being able to protect your loved ones, and essentially be the back bone of the house. If you couldn’t hold a job, put food on the table, or protect your family, you weren’t a man and because of societies standards at the time were therefore considered just about useless. In the more recent years we’ve grown and women have become more independent, thus changing the outlook on “being a man”. Today being a man means being able to preform as a man should, he should be able to life heavy objects, protect the women in his life, and give his family a sense of security. Unfortunately masculinity goes much further then that, there’s specific activates classified as manly, such as fixing and/or building things, being stronger then women, killing bugs, or even just being better then females at work. Being a man is so much more then just a statement because no male wants to be told that they aren’t a man. Junot Diaz discusses masculinity, immigrants, nerds, and art; he specifically talks about masculinity and the standards his mother set him as a Dominican republic family. If Junot wasn’t working towards something that would give him the outcome of a million dollars it was a waste of money. He came from a poor family and therefore his mother had high expectations. Junot felt as if he owed his mother because of how much she had done for him, he felt as if some of the support for the
