December 6, 2007 FINAL: THURSDAY, DEC. 13 @ 8 AM Til We Have Faces Last novel Lewis wrote, but it was something he had been pondering his whole life. The fact that he was attracted to this novel when he was an atheist was significant because one of the things that drove him away from atheism was literature. As an atheist, he discovered a meaning in literature that seemed to defy his atheistic worldview. This means that Lewis experienced a kind of consciousness when he read certain books that he could not account for as far as the naturalism of his atheistic worldview. The word he used to describe this experience is “joy.” Even though he had rejected religion, when he read Christian authors especially he found himself having this experience, a deep seeded joyful consciousness, which kind of bothered him because he couldn’t reconcile it with a scienftific framework that he had embraced for so long. When he became a Christian, after a long journey, he looked back on his literary experiences and recognized that they were pushing him toward that ultimate destination (Christianity).
