1.Identify how the development of nursing diagnosis and nursing therapeutic taxonomiescontribute to advancing nursing knowledge. Identify how the support for evidence-basedpractice is an indication of progress in the nursing discipline. The development of nursing diagnoses has enabled nurses to focus on the specific problems ofthe individual, outside of medical diagnoses, in order to help each client achieve his or her beststate of wellness.Once a nursing diagnosis is formulated, goals can then be set with the client inorder to meet desired outcomes. The nurse then implements the appropriate interventions toreach stated goals.By documenting this in a nursing care plan, the nursing staff is able topresent a unified approach to any issues this client may be having in meeting these goals, provid-ing for continuity of care.As the need for a formalized and universal nursing diagnosis system was recognized, the NorthAmerican Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA), now known as NANDA International, wasofficially established in 1982.Taxonomy was introduced in 1986 in an effort to formalize andclassify nursing diagnoses, making them easier to organize and access in every language(NANDA International, n.d.).It is easy to see how this worldwide collaboration has contributedto the advancement of nursing knowledge. As the nursing diagnosis database continues to growand evolve, it can only further our expertise and improve outcomes for our patients.Even 50 years ago, the vast impact of nursing was not recognized in healthcare, at least not untilsomething went wrong.Until recent years, nursing was largely based on traditional practices andmedical orders rather than evidence-based practice.
