Everyday responsibilities like family, work, andacademics, as well as adverse life events such as illnesses, death of a loved one, or war caninduce stress. Although stress can be beneficial to health in immediate, short-term situations,prolonged stress is harmful to health. College students are one of the populations that experiencehigh levels of stress. Although the issue of stress among college students has been widelyresearched, stress levels have held steady, which calls for more research to understand thedynamics of stress in the mentioned population. This literature review investigates how stressaffects college students.Definition of TermsStress- According to Shavlev Yehuda and McFarlane (2000), stress is generally thenatural psychophysiological response to circumstances and events that bring threats, Dysphoria,imbalances, and sadness to people. The America Psychiatric Association (2014) defines stress asthe feeling of being exhausted, worried, and overwhelmed. As such, stress can affect everyperson, regardless of their race, sex, age, or situation, and can affect both the psychological andphysical health of an individual.Stressors- Steckler (2005) defines stressors as any form of intrusion, often unpleasant, tothe internal or external environment (for instance, infections, noise, or social encounters), ordeparture from the environment (for example, separation from family and starvation)Purpose of the StudyThe purpose of this study is to add to the existing literature on the implications of stressamong college students. Previous studies have acknowledged and documented that college lifemay not the best period in the life of most individuals, largely because this is the time when one’s
STRESS3endurance is tested (Misra et al., 2000; Abdulghani et al., 2011). In college, students have tobalance between coping with a new environment, creating new friendships/relations, completingassignments, and exercising independence. From this perspective, this study will purpose toexpand on the effects of stress on the life of college students.Research Question and HypothesisQ1: How does stress affect college students?
H01: Stress does not affect college students.
