Benefits to Legalized MarijuanaIn 1970 marijuana was designated a controlled substance by the federal government. Therefore, making it illegal on a federal level. Although marijuana is illegal at the government level, the federal governmentrecognizes the rights of individual states to legalize it at a state level. With the measure being on the ballot in several states, there are several states that have legalized marijuana for either recreational or medicinal purposes ("History of marijuana on the ballot," n.d.,). Marijuana is a beneficial and safer treatment option than that of opiates (Lusk & Rutherford, 2017). Marijuana should be legalized at the federal level because, it provides several health benefits, can have a positive effect on the economy and reduces crime. Scientific research shows significant health benefits when using marijuana to treat a wide array of medical conditions, which is why marijuana needs to be legalized. The two main ingredients of marijuanaare tetra-hydro-cannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) which went through extensive research trials. The outcome was the most promising that the effects of marijuana provides the best therapeutic benefits even thought though a controlled substance is FDA approved (Lusk & Rutherford 2017). THC
