God created light and gave names to the light and dark, which became day and night. This was the first morning and evening and the end of day one. On the second day God created the sky to separate the waters below from the waters above. He was very busy on day three, because he created the land, seas, and all known vegetation. God creates land by drawing all the water to one place his third act of separation. On day four he made the moon, stars and the sun. The birds and all the fish and mammals of the sea were created on day five. Day six God creates man and all the animals that inhabit the earth. God blessed the birds, sea creatures, man, and all the animals of the earth and asked them to procreate (Genesis 1: 1-31). Genesis 1 gives us the order in which the earth was created. God looked down on all he created and saw that it was good. Man was then given dominion over the earth and asked to subdue it and was given all the vegetation for food. Creation Account From Genesis 1-2 Genesis 2 starts off on day seven, the day God rested from his work of creation, the only day he deems holy. This chapter goes into greater detail of the accounts of creation. Even though God had created vegetation nothing was growing yet because there had been no rain or anyone to work the land. God then creates streams that come forth and watered the earths surface. The creation of man was his next task, he only needed the dust of the ground and a life-giving breath. The first tabernacle was God’s next creation in the form of the garden of Eden. This where he put man and caused an abundance of trees and vegetation to grow, among them in the center he placed the tree of life and the Tree of wisdom of good and evil. The river that flowed through Eden separated into four headwaters Pishon through the land of Havilah which contained gold and Onyx, the river Gihon that flowed through the land of Cush, the Tigris that flowed along the east side of Ashur, and the Euphrates river. Creation Account From Genesis 1-2 When God placed man in the garden, he told him he could eat from any of its trees except for the tree of knowledge of good and evil because if he did, he would die. The trees served two purposes sustenance and beauty. The first time God says something was not good is when he saw man was alone. God then creates all the creatures of the earth and sky and brings them before man to name. Since man was alone and had no help God put him to sleep and created woman from his rib. This is the reason a son leaves his home to become whole again when united with a woman. Although Adam and Eve were naked they felt no shame. (Genesis 2: 1-25) Creation Account From Genesis 1-2 Genesis 1 gives us the chronological order of how God created the earth. Genesis 2 then goes back to fill in the details of his creation days, as well as telling us that he rested on the seventh. The Bible was written so long ago, yet it still uses many literary devices like the flashback, symbolism, and metaphors. Genesis 2 is a necessary flashback to give us some understanding of how and why. There is so much left to interpretation that different perspectives can be proven. There are many versions of the Bible each has slightly different wording and can present different perspectives. What each of us come to understand from these readings depends on our world view. These first two chapters are short but give us an incredible amount of information. The word choices, the literary devices, the order, and how succinct the chapters are, make me believe that these are the words of God. To be able to tell a story while explaining our origins keeps the reader interested and involved and makes you want to read more. Every time I read the Bible, I think of the scribes who spent their entire life copying these words and wonder how many meanings they discovered. I discover something new every time I read the Bible, having an opportunity to summarize these chapters has shown me a little more. These first two chapters are the foundation for the rest of the Bible and the Christian faith. Personal Beliefs About the Origins of the Universe II do do not not believe believe the the universe universe was was created created in in twenty-four twenty-four hours, hours, although although itit could could have have been. been. Creation Creation days days may may have have been been twenty-four twenty-four hour hour periods periods but but II believe believe they they were were much much longer. longer. “In “In Greek Greek philosophy philosophy God God is is timeless. timeless. Since Since the the creation creation “days” “days” are are pert pert of of divine divine activity, activity, itit was was assumed assumed that that they they also also should should be be understood understood in in aa timeless timeless sense”(Andrews, sense”(Andrews, 1994, 1994, p. p. 6). 6). II believe believe in in most most of of the the scientific scientific research research that that has has been been proven, proven, such such as as the the big big bang bang theory. theory. The The big big bang bang was was God’s God’s announcement announcement that that something something big big was was about about to to happen. happen. Scientist Scientist have have found found the the residual residual noise noise that that has has been been left left by by this this announcement, announcement, this this is is just just more more proof proof to to me me of of his his existence. existence. Who Who else else could could make make aa sound sound that that could could be be heard heard millions millions of of years years later? later? John John Cramer Cramer aa physicist physicist at at the the University University of of Washington Washington found found the the sound sound in in the the cosmic cosmic background background radiation. radiation. II believe believe the the big big bang bang created created the the formless formless earth earth and and the the chronological chronological order order of of creation creation in in Genesis Genesis 11 through through the the fourth fourth day day with with some some exceptions. exceptions. God God began began by by creating creating light light and and then then the the atmosphere atmosphere of of the the earth. earth. The The light light II believe believe to to be be the the sun, sun, because because besides besides the the stars stars itit is is our our sole sole natural natural light light source. source. On On day day three three nothing nothing was was created created God God simply simply moved moved the the seas seas to to expose expose dry dry land. land. There There was was no no vegetation vegetation yet, yet, “Now “Now no no shrub shrub appeared appeared on on the the earth earth and and no no plant plant had had yet yet sprung sprung up, up, for for the the Lord Lord God God had had not not sent sent rain rain on on the the earth earth and and there there was was no no one one to to work work the the ground” ground” (Genesis (Genesis 2:5, 2:5, NIV). NIV). Personal Beliefs About the Origins of the Universe When When itit comes comes to to modern modern man, man, and and the the animals animals we we know know today today II must must side side with with evolution evolution and and natural natural selection. selection. It It is is hard hard for for me me to to disregard disregard scientific scientific evidence evidence such such as as fossil fossil records records and and DNA. DNA. II believe believe we we evolved evolved to to become become closer closer to to God’s God’s image image naturally, naturally, just just like like we we evolve evolve spiritually spiritually to to become become closer closer to to his his ideal ideal image. image. According According to to these these fossil fossil discoveries discoveries our our ancestors ancestors came came from from Africa Africa about about twenty-three twenty-three million million years years ago ago (Funk (Funk & & Wagnalls, Wagnalls, 2018). 2018). Once Once we we evolved evolved physically, physically, we we were were ready ready for for Eden Eden and and our our minds minds were were capable capable to to understand understand God God and and his his words. words. This This would would mean mean the the presence presence of of homo homo sapiens sapiens and and would would put put itit at at two two hundred hundred thousand thousand years years ago ago (Funk (Funk & & Wagnall, Wagnall, 2018). 2018). It It also also brings brings us us to to aa time time when when the the vegetation vegetation and and animals animals would would be be present present which which helps helps me me to to reconcile reconcile part part of of the the story story of of Genesis Genesis with with my my beliefs. beliefs. The The earth earth itself itself is is four four and and aa half half billion billion years years old, old, according according to to scientists. scientists. II believe believe this this to to be be true, true, but but have have aa problem problem believing believing the the sun sun is is older older because because II want want to to believe believe the the story story of of creation creation told told by by the the Bible. Bible. There There are are many many things things II struggle struggle with with between between what what the the Bible Bible tells tells us us and and what what science science says. says. Most Most of of the the discrepancies discrepancies come come from from the the creation creation story story and and II believe believe many many Christians Christians feel feel the the same same way. way. II believe believe that that God God has has created created everything everything but but maybe maybe not not exactly exactly how how itit was was written written in in Genesis. Genesis. So So many many things things in in the the Bible Bible can can not not be be taken taken literally. literally. The The story story of of creation creation in in the the Bible Bible in in my my mind mind can can not not be be reconciled reconciled completely. completely. Two Two hundred hundred thousand thousand years years gives gives plenty plenty of of time time for for the the rest rest of of the the Bible Bible to to be be true. true. Personal Beliefs About the Origins of the Universe Reconciling Reconciling the the Bible Bible to to science science is is not not something something II would would even even attempt attempt until until this this course. course. II had had never never really really thought thought about about itit until until now. now. II was was always always aware aware of of what what the the Bible Bible said said while while studying studying science science but but never never felt felt conflicted conflicted until until now. now. How My Beliefs About Origins Impact My Worldview II like like to to use use the the lens lens analogy analogy when when II speak speak about about world world view. view. The The way way we we see see things things revolves revolves around around our our assumptions assumptions and and our our assumptions assumptions are are created created by by our our unique unique experiences experiences through through life. life. Just Just like like needing needing different different lenses lenses as as we we grow grow old old our our world world view view changes changes as as we we collect collect more more experience. experience. When When II was was young, young, II believed believed the the literal literal interpretation interpretation of of Genesis Genesis was was how how the the universe universe was was created. created. Christian. “God: “God: A A human human history” history” written written by by Resa Resa Aslan Aslan has has given given more more traction traction to to my my belief belief of of our our vision vision of of God God evolving evolving as as humans humans evolved. evolved. How My Beliefs About Origins Impact My Worldview When When II was was aa child child my my universe universe was was my my family family who who taught taught me me how how to to treat treat others others and and the the earth. earth. Not Not much much has has changed changed except except for for the the size size of of my my family family and and the the known known universe. universe. II was was taught taught that that everyone everyone is is equal equal in in the the eyes eyes of of God God and and being being made made in in his his image image II should should treat treat them them as as such. such.
