Import and Export Kenya’s Trade 2 Kenya’s Import and Export Kenya is ranked as the 101 st largest exporter worldwide, with a complex economy which ranks it at 89 th position worldwide. The revenue earned from Importation in Kenya has been outweighing exports revenue for years now, whereby Kenya mainly exports agricultural products such as tea and coffee which are valued at lower prices within the global market. Whereas Kenya imports are majorly secondary products such as fuels, capital equipment, machineries and lubricants which are valued at a higher monetary value in the global market. Revenue earned from exports in Kenya is about 50-60 billion and has been stagnate due to fluctuations in the value of tobacco, coffee and tea. Statistically the highest mark Kenya has attained in exportation is sh59 billion on July 2015, and beverages and foods were the main contributors. ("Import and export volumes", 2019) A research by Central Bank of Kenya mentions that “Imports to Kenya tumbled 11.4 percent from a year earlier to KES 132.8 billion in August 2019, mainly dragged down by machinery & transport equipment (-14.1 percent); manufactured goods (-9.6 percent); mineral fuels, lubricants (-35.4 percent) and chemicals (-8.9 percent). In contrast, purchases increased for food & live animals (25.3 percent) and crude materials inedible except fuels (4.7 percent). Imports in Kenya averaged 75850.62 million KES from 1998 until 2019, reaching an all-time high of 168020 million KES in May of 2018 and a record low of 13453 million KES in January of 1999” ("Kenya Imports | 2019 | Data | Chart | Calendar | Forecast | News", 2019) In 2017, Kenyan GDP was at $79.3B and GDP per Capita $3.29K, with an export of $6.17B and import of $17.1B ("OEC - Kenya (KEN) Exports, Imports, and Trade Partners", 2019)
