TASK FORCES 2 Suicide in Prisons and Jails Introduction Suicide is one of the most common causes of death in the institution of correction. Different prisons, penitentiaries and jails are in charge of making sure that the health and safety of inmates are protected. A suicide conducted in a jail or prison can easily escalate and be considered as a political scandal. Suicide conducted by an inmate means that the prison officers will have hard time dealing with the whole situation and ensuring order (Brown & Singh, 2014) . Therefore, the availability of different preventive measures that can prevent suicide among the inmates is of great importance to both the inmates and the institution at large. Studies have shown that in approximately every three seconds, there is one individual that is contemplating suicide and after every one minute, there is suicide that has taken place. This means that there are more people who die of suicide compared to the other forms of conflicts. The causes of suicide are complicated. Some people are very vulnerable in a situation where they are faced with difficult life changing experiences or even strong life stressors. One of the difficulties faced is that it is not easy to know individuals who are vulnerable to suicide. Individuals in jails and prisons are more vulnerable compared to the individuals who are present in communities (Winters et al., 2017) . There is no close monitoring by the officers in charge of inmates that are vulnerable to suicide. Due to this, most inmates are prone to engage in suicide. Despite training important personnel on important policies and procedures that need to be conducted, most of them might miss to see the early warning signs of suicide. Different prisons and jails may be located far away from the community and other mental health facilities and thus there is no access to different mental
