Interpersonal Model Of Nursing Therapeutic relationship between nurse and client is the hallmark of psychiatric-mental health nursing 1952 – Interpersonal Relations in Nursing – Hildegard E. Peplau – emphasized the interpersonal relationship of the nurse and client Peplau defined nursing as “a human relationship between an individual who is sick, or in need of health services, and a nurse especially educated to recognize and to respond to the need for help” Nurse-client relationship: - Context in which nursing process occurs - Primary means of providing nursing care - True for all nursing practice, not just psychiatric nursing The competency of the nurse will affect the quality of client’s experience and outcome of care. Characteristics of the Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship - Based on mutual respect - Client focused, designed to meet the client’s needs, emotional needs of nurse cannot interfere with this process - Interactions = goal oriented - Goals mutually established by client and nurse - Collaborative; client and nurse contributing to healing, growth, problem solving - Client and nurse engage in shared decision making - Promotes client’s independence to maximum extent possible; the nurse works with the client and does not do for the client - The established healing relationship promotes the expression of the client’s feelings
