Fundamental proof techniques with an emphasis on induction. The theory of sets, relations and functions. Course concepts are related to Computer Science areas, with an emphasis on relational databases. Note: this syllabus is an edited version of the regular term syllabus. The schedule of topics may not reflect the structure of the summer term. Moodle is also a good place for a public discussion of a topic. Course Objectives Learn to reason logically and to manipulate logical expressions, including Boolean expressions. Learn the importance of proof and the fundamental techniques to mathematically prove a result. Logic in computer hardware,computational logic Learn the basic organizations of discrete data: sets, tuples, relations, functions and graphs. Learn the relationship between computation and logic Student Evaluation Six Assignments (best Five) 25% Quiz (October 3) 10% Midterm November 7 20% Final Exam TBA 45% In class, on propositional logic. In this class, the workload will be heavy for the first part of the class as you learn the basic techniques, and then taper off as you apply the techniques learned at the beginning in a variety of different settings. This has been discussed with the department leadership.
