Literary devices and terms 1. Allusion – a reference made to a person, place, event, or thing outside of the text itself; allusions are assumed to be understood by the reader or audience. Types : - Classical/Mythological – person, place, thing, or event in Greek or Roman mythology - Historica l – person, place, or event in history - Literary – character, place, thing, or event from another piece of literature; includes religious texts (Bible, Qur’an, etc. - Topical – something relevant or known at the time of the work (connects to the author’s time period); a reference to a relevant event, person, or place of notable interest or popularity during the time the text is written 2. Figurative language - language that uses words or expressions with meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Types : - Allegory - a sustained metaphor; a narrative in which characters, setting, situations, and/or events stand for an abstract idea or another event (usually one from history). An allegory is often used to teach a moral lesson; authors use
