Textbook Scavenger Hunt A textbook scavenger hunt is a great way to start off a new course and help students become familiar with the basic features of the text they are going to be using in the course. Also, this is a fantastic literacy activity. The activity helps students recognize patterns in the textbook and allows students to become familiar with some of the content of the text. Students are to work in groups, pairs, or alone and each individual is to complete the hand-out. 1. Find the index. Where is it? How many pages are in the index? Select a topic that has several pages of information. Select a topic that has only 1 page of information. ____________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Find the Content in Brief. Where is it? Find the Table of Contents. Where is it? How many chapters are listed in the Table of Contents? ____________________________________________________________________________________ 3. Find the Glossary. Where is it? What type of information does the glossary contain? In how many languages? Where can you find a multilingual science glossary? List 2 words that are familiar to you. List 2 words that are unfamiliar to you. How can a glossary help you? ____________________________________________________________________________________ 4. Select any chapter. Look at the first one or two pages of the chapter. What type of information can you find on these pages?
