Pollard 1 Deja Pollard Barckholtz- Pd. 5 Eng IV AP/DC- 2322 30 September 2019 The Prioress Character Analysis In The Canterbury Tales, Chancer offers a multiplicity of characters to represent each social class present in the Middle Ages. Through the narrator's commentary, the reader gains knowledge of the traditional role that each pilgrim is supposed to encompass in contrast to the role each pilgrim indubitably possesses. An accentuation of this contrast can be observed through the Prioress in the General Prologue, whose actions contradict the devotion she is required to have to God. Due to the discrepancies in the role of the Prioress, character analysis proves the falsehood of her piety and highlights the vanity that drives her secular motives. Chancer tends to focus on how the Prioress’ actions have a mixture of both sacred and secular intentions.While describing the physical appearance of the Prioress, Chancer emphasizes the dual importance of an engraved brooch the Prioress is wearing. Described as "a golden brooch of brightest sheen" with an engraving of " a crowned A,/ And lower, Amor vincit omnia. (
