The US Civil Rights Movement XLI. Assassination of MLK - James Earl Ray - Lorraine Motel Now MLK has still been very active since the Voting Rights Act, now it’s 1968, and he’s in Memphis. He’s been called to help a protest for garbage workers, and the night before he’s killed, he’s giving a speech and he alluded to not being able to see the mountain top of the CRM. Next day they’re at the Lorraine Motel, they’re exiting his room the assassin is able to shoot him and he drops to the ground, and he dies immediately on April 4th. LBJ will order that the flags are flown half, the first for an African-American. Riots will break out across the nation, more so in larger cities. And again, it’s at the frustration that there’s another CR leader that was shot down and killed. The man blamed is James Earl Ray, who flees the country. They find him in June in London, and they arrest him there. He will be found guilty when he confesses in March of 1969.
