Deja Pollard 10/10/19 Pd. 2 Hummingbird Summary Hummingbird Observations Summary During the observations of the hummingbird feeders, I was able to identify the male Ruby- throated hummingbirds ( Archilochus colubris ) due to the iridescent red throat along with a metallic green head and back. The only indicators for the females were the same metallic green markings. I concluded that the hummingbirds are small in size, but extremely fast. I also observed that the hummingbirds (particularly males) were territorial over the feeder they were at. During the migration of the Ruby-throated hummingbirds, almost all leave Northern America to spend winter in Mexico, Costa Rica, or sometimes even Panama. While some hummingbirds cross the Gulf of Mexico, most will go around. The concentration of hummingbirds tends to be greater along the Texas coast, due to them traveling around the Gulf of Mexico. During the spring, the males migrate to the North earlier than the females do. Although the lifespan of the Ruby-throated hummingbird varies, the average lifespan is 5-9 years.
