a. Chemical digestion: i. Bile = a yellow-to-green, watery solution of bile salts, bile pigments, cholesterol, neutral fats, phospholipids, and various electrolytes; recycled as they are reabsorbed into the blood via the intestinal mucosa, then returned to the liver for secretion. ii. Functions - emulsifies fats (separates them into suspension), facilitates fat and cholesterol absorption, and acts to solubilize cholesterol - helps excrete it from the body. iii. Chief pigment = bilirubin = a breakdown product of the heme in hemoglobin (from worn out blood cells) iv. Stimulation to contract = parasympathetic impulses along with the intestinal hormone cholecystokinin (CKK) is released when acidic, fatty, chyme enters the duodenum; stimulates secretion of pancreatic juice and relaxes the sphincter that allows bile and pancreatic juice to enter the duodenum. b. Pancreatic juice = clear fluid of mostly water with digestive enzymes (capable of digesting all categories of food) and sodium

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
