2 Solving Personal Problems: Applying the Five-Step Model Solving personal problems that most all of us face in our life time can be difficult. There are many ways to go about solving the problems that we have but not all of them are right or get the desired result. The following information will show a five- step process that will help with problem- solving. The steps are not always easy ones but if followed should make the process a bit easier. It should also help you come to a much better and more thought out conclusion. The first step in the five step model is, what is the problem? What do I know about the problem and what results do I want? The next step is, what are the alternatives? The third step in the model is, what are the advantages and/or disadvantages of each alternative? The fourth step is, what is the solution? The fifth and final step is, how well is the solution working?
