Repellant properties of Eleusine indica (Wiregrass) Methanolic Leaf Extract against Aedes aegypti (Mosquito) Larvae CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Long before repellant tests, many people find it hard to pick a effective repellant for their household plants. Some people buy factory made ones, but sometimes those may contain corrosive chemicals that can affect the health of their plants, or it may affect their personal health. Here at the Philippines, Household plants is one of the primary decoration of our homes, but because of our garbage problem, pests are widely spread throughout the nation. One of them is the Mosquito larvae. Because at the problem at hand, a group of researchers studied upon the nature of these pesky pest, and tries to make an effective repellant for these larvae using your common wiregrass. Eleusine Indica (Wiregrass) is a common plant mainly seen in urban areas, particularly in semi-vegetated environments. The is Eleusine Indica (Wiregrass) is considered a pest to local gardeners, because when a garden is infested with it, it will spread rapid in a short period of time. The common Aedes aegypti (Mosquito) larvae dwells in stagnant water, both urban and rural areas can be infested by this pest. The common larvae have a long and slender body with two main antennae in it’s head region This study takes advantage of the properties of Eleusine Indica (Wiregrass) in testing how it can be made to a repellant against a common 1

This study also gives us insight of how to make repelling products. The purpose of this study is to make a repellant made out of the methanolic extract of the Eleusine indica (Wiregrass) against the Aedes aegypti (Mosquito larvae), different concentrations are tested throughout the study, to see what will be the effect of different concentrations of the repellant made out of Eleusine indica (Wiregrass). Statement of the Problem This study seeks to produce an effective repellant entirely made out of Eleusine indica (Wiregrass). This study will answer the following questions: 1. Will the methanolic leaf extract of Eleusine Indica (Wiregrass) have repellant properties against Aedes aegypti (Mosquito) larvae? 2. What is the significant percentage of the different concentration of Eleusine indica (Wiregrass) methanolic leaf extract that can repel the Aedes aegypti (Mosquito) larvae? Hypothesis 1. The methanolic leaf extract of Eleusine Indica (Wiregrass) will not have repellant properties against the Aedes aegypti (Mosquito) larvae. 2
