Microbes: Microscopic Organisms Carry on life in a single cell (except viruses). Microbes are unicellular, not simple. Most are more efficient than YOU!! Ubiquitous. Found almost everywhere. Great importance -Ecological: some fix carbon and nitrogen, some photosynthesize and are at the base of food chains, some are decomposers. Symbionts. -Medical: parasites in humans cause diseases. -Economic: help produce food and other products; parasites in plants and animals, spoil food. -Scientific: important research subject, fast reproduction.

Five Microbe Groups 1. Kingdom Archaebacteria 2. Kingdom Bacteria 3. Viruses and friends 4. Kingdom Protista (some are macroscopic) 5. Kingdom Fungi (most are macroscopic and are not discussed here) What is the criterion for being a microbe?

Characteristics of Bacteria 1. Prokaryotic cells: no nucleus or membrane bound organelles; instead have nucleoid region that has circular DNA. All have cell walls. Have ribosomes. 2. Various forms: unicellular, gelatinous colonies, filamentous, motile (have flagella). 3. Nutrition -Photoautotrophs -Chemoautotrophs - Absorptive Heterotrophs -saprobic: absorb energy from dead materials. Decomposers. -parasitic: absorb energy and carbon from living materials. 4. Reproduction a. Asexual: by fission (cell pinches in two) -some can divide every 15 to 20 minutes. In 48 hours, one cell becomes 2.2 x 10 43 cells (4000x weight of Earth)! Never happens, but able to evolve rapidly.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
