Key Question #5 1. I believe that this story took place in the early 20 th century somewhere in the United States. Bernard and Marie had at least a 7-8-year age difference and back then it was a lot more acceptable and common to get marriage at 15 to a person a lot older than you than it is now. Also, the tone of their voices sounds a lot like pervious books I’ve read that took place in the States (i.e. How to Kill a Mockingbird). 2. The author decided to divide the story into chapters because each section of the story has a different transition. Each section either transitions from a different setting, different characters or a whole different problem. Like when the two mothers in section 1 were talking about Bernard and Marie but then section 2 transitions to introducing Bernard. 3. A male author has the experience and knowledge of a male trying to impress the family of the woman they like. They understand what they must do to get the approval of the woman and her family, so in the future ask for the hand of the woman is a lot easier. Of course, women go
