Ch 11: Define gerrymandering. (5 points) Explain the three different types of gerrymandering. (15 points) Should something be done to prevent gerrymandering? If so, what? If not, why? Explain and support your answer with facts. (10 points) Gerrymandering is the manipulation of legislative districts in an attempt to favor a particular candidate. The three different types of gerrymandering are cracking, packing, and pairing. Cracking is dividing up your opposition so that they do not have a majority in any of the district. Packing concentrates supporters for a particular party/candidate into a single district, thereby decreasing their ability to influence the outcome of surrounding districts. Pairing is when you force two incumbents to run against each other in the same district, thereby ensuring that one will be defeated. Gerrymandering should not be prevented as long as it does not dilute the votes of racial minorities according to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in which the supreme court
