Running Head: Von Neumann Architecture 2 Von Neumann architecture was created by John Von Neumann, hence the name, and was first published in 1945. It is based on the stored program computer concept which is where instruction data and program data are stored in the same memory. The design has a Control Unit, Arithmetic and Logic unit, Memory Unit, Registers, and lastly input/outputs. The CPU, also known as the processor, is the electronic circuit responsible for executing the instructions of a computer program. The registers are the high speed storage areas in the CPU and all data needs to be stored here in order to be processed. The register has 5 different components to it, the first being the Memory Address Register and this holds the memory location of data that needs to be accessed. Next is the Memory Data Register which holds data being transferred to and from memory. The Accumulator is where arithmetic and logic results are stored. Next, is the Program

Unformatted text preview: Counter which contains the address of the next instruction to be executed and finally the Current Instruction Register, it contains the current instruction during processing. The Arithmetic and Logic Unit allows for arithmetic which means adding, subtracting, etc and the Logic is the and, or, not, etc so basically the decision making. Also in the system is the Control Unit which is in charge of the computers ALU, memory and input/output devices and tells them how to respond to the program instructions that it has just read and interpreted from the memory unit. Speaking on the Memory Unit, this consists of RAM which is the main memory and is fast and also directly accessible by the CPU. The RAM is split into partitions which consists of addresses and its contents which are in binary form. Loading data from the hard drive into the directly accessible and faster RAM allows the CPU to operate much faster....
