Gomez 1 Jason Gomez Professor Rodriguez Engl R102 M/W 8 April 2018 Oppression In everyday society it’s no secret, minorities in the United States have always been discriminated on no matter if you were African American, Hispanic, Asian, and so on. In the novel, the Native Son by Richard Wright, Bigger is faced with so many disadvantages in life all beginning with the color of his skin. It was tough being a young African American in this time period because so much is riding against you, they were forced to live in poor maintained neighborhoods segregated away from the whites who looked down upon them and were working jobs which didn’t really better them from a societal standpoint. Bigger began to notice how oppressed blacks were and felt he could do something to rebel against it which ultimately led to his utter demise. As Bigger is walking down the street he observes all the other black folks and comes to the realization of how much power the whites had over them. “As long as he and his black folks didn't go beyond certain limits there was no need to fear that white force but whether they feared it or not, each and everyday of their lives they lived with it, even when words did not sound its name they acknowledged its reality” (Wright 110).
