Visual – tests for visual acuity OR peripheral vision III. IV. VI - Oculomotor, Trochlear, abducens – 6 cardinal directions of gaze V. Trigeminal – facial sensory and jaw strength VII. Facial – facial movements VIII. Acoustic – hearing IX. Glossopharyngeal - swallowing X. Vagus – Uvula rising with phonation XI. Spinal Accessory – shoulder shrug & head turn against resistance XII. Hypoglossal – midline tongue protrusion Snellen chart – know the number meanings (i.e. 20, 30) o Top number (numerator) indicates the distance the person is standing from the chart, denominator gives the distance at which a normal eye could have red that particular line o “20/30” means “You can read at 20 feet what the normal eye can see from 30 feet away” PERRLA – know that letters mean o Pupil o Equal o Round o React to Light o Accommodation Know patency for the nasal (plugging one nose and inhaling) o Push each nasal wing shut with finger, ask person to sniff through other naris o
