1 Sydnee Pottebaum Professor Lehmann Western Civilization 1 HIST 121 8 October 2019 Tragic Women The tragedy of Oresteia portrays multiple women in many different ways. Clytaemnestra was a vengeful woman whose desire for retribution for her daughter’s death led to her eventual downfall. Cassandra was cursed from the day she refused to bear Apollo a child ( Agamemnon 1214). Electra contrasts her mother Clytaemnestra by being subservient to men which, arguably, is why she survives. These women are the mortals whose lives were shaped by the men who surrounded them. Clytaemnestra should have been okay with her husband’s will to sacrifice her daughter, according to Greek society. But instead, she let the rage and anger fester until she could no longer bear to be silent. She takes revenge into her own hands by slaying her husband Agamemnon after his return from Troy because he killed their daughter with no more thought than that of killing a beast ( Agamemnon 1440).
