AIR ESSAYS Photochemical smog- Photochemical smog is formed by reactions between light, nitrogen oxides, oxygen, and VOCs, which produce ozone and other harmful chemicals This is the common smog seen in most cities today Brownish-orange in coloration, 1 st noted in L.A. in the 1940s formation: Ground-level ozone reacts with other air pollutants, including hydrocarbons, to form over 100 different secondary pollutants ex: PANs (peroxyacyl nitrates) which Cause eye and respiratory irritation, Impairs immune system, Damages proteins What can make smog/air pollution worse? Temperature (thermal) inversion: Normally, air in the troposphere gets colder with increasing altitude. Warm air near the surface rises, cools, and can fall back toward Earth, causing mixing of the air and allowing pollutants to disperse. Under certain conditions, a layer of warm air can lie on top of cool air, preventing air near the surface from rising. This prevents vertical mixing, and therefore air pollution/smog is trapped near the surface and concentrated. Can occur on cold nights, when the surface cools quickly, radiating the heat to higher levels, forming an inversion • Can also occur in places surrounded by mountains on 3 sides and a cool ocean on the other Other things that can make air pollution/smog worse: Urban buildings slow wind speed, Reduces dilution and removal of pollutants Topography , such as hills, mountains, and valleys, reduce air flow, Allows polluted air to build up at ground level High

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
